Peking University, April 26, 2022: Topping the forum's agenda is a panel discussion about carbon neutrality and what enterprises can do about it. CGTN's Dai Kaiyi talked to attending experts there about how enterprises should view the climate-related buzzword and what market rules should be in place to advance progress.
Among a wide range of topics put on the Boao Forum's agenda, carbon neutrality is the one being watched closely. Industrial experts gathered to discuss the current status quo and where the world is heading on this issue. For Liu Qiao, Dean of Guanghua Management School of Peking University, carbon neutrality could mean a paradigm shift.
LIU QIAO Dean of Guanghua Management School, Peking University "For me, it's an indicator of the beginning of a new civilization, which means carbon emissions enter the companies production function, which means the companies' growth paradigm is going to change."
Dean Liu believes enterprises need to deal with the issue of reducing carbon emissions, and it should be seen as a positive move rather than viewed as additional costs for companies.
LIU QIAO Dean of Guanghua Management School, Peking University "We should have an accurate price for carbon emissions, If the company doesn't have the incentive to really reduce carbon emissions, there's no point talking about new models or new technologies, so carbon prices is probably the key thing."
Dean Liu also says the nationwide carbon trading system is still in the early stages and its liquidity poses a problem. In the future, he believes financial markets could play a bigger role in helping the market grow, as carbon-related financial derivatives can be introduced to improve the price of carbon emissions.
DAI KAIYI Boao, Hainan Province "Attending guests ranging from technology giants to diary producers shared their insights during the panel discussion about carbon neutrality, and there seemed to be one thing in common: they all agree it's an urgent task to speed up the process of combating the global threat of climate change.
