China-Pakistan Ties: Urdu teacher from Pakistan expresses joy of living in China
Nov. 04, 2022
Arshad Bhatti completed his masters and doctoral degrees at The Communication University of China in Beijing. He then transitioned from a student to a lecturer, teaching Urdu at Peking University. Arshad said he has learnt a lot about Chinese culture. Lu Sirui has more.

Although Arshad has lived in China for nearly eight years, he's still new to Peking University. Not long ago, he made new friends when waiting in line for COVID testing. Then they'd routinely play badminton together, but for this weekend they decided to try chess. He said he has met many open-minded Chinese who helped him to explore the country. But his friends said his outstanding social skills helps him build a rapport quickly.

FAN FAN College of Urban and Environmental Science Peking University "He's really good at interacting with us in an easy and amiable way. He also tells us his interesting personal stories about his childhood. He also sometimes struggles with the language barrier, so we offer him a helping hand whenever we can with things like communicating with online sellers."

XIA RONGYU Ecology Department, Peking University "He's also good at exploring new places. He always posts beautiful scenery pictures of places which I don't even know where they are."

Besides teaching Urdu at Peking University, Arshad also helped to translate Xi Jinping's speech into Urdu.

Recently, he translated Xi's view on human rights and he said he's impressed by his deep concern over people's needs.

ARSHAD BHATTI Urdu Language Professor, Peking University "I'm convinced that the realities of China are different than other country; so we cannot have the same formula of human rights for every situation. China has its own realities, for example, the first thing is to feed our people, provide them shelter and take them out of poverty. This is what China has been doing and I think it has been quite successful."

LU SIRUI Beijing "People-to-people relations between China and Pakistan is growing! Pakistan is one of the biggest sources of China's international students. The two countries have jointly dealt with the COVID-19 pandemic and major natural disasters. The China-Pakistan Economic Corridor has also deepened bilateral exchanges. Beijing says China still looks forward to further advancing relations. LU SIRUI, CGTN, BEIJING."
