Abstract:
Additive Manufacturing (AM), commonly known as three-dimensional printing, is widely recognized as a disruptive technology, having the potential to fundamentally change the nature of future manufacturing. By building products layerwise, AM represents a paradigm shift in manufacturing, enabling the production of lightweight, customized products, with topologically optimized structures and high-value-added components with novel embedded functionalities that are difficult or even impossible to produce with traditional technologies. This new generation of products can find applications in different industrial sectors: from aerospace to automotive, from oil and gas to machinery, from biomedical to constructions, to name a few. Despite tremendous enthusiasm, AM faces several major research challenges for the widespread adoption of these innovative technologies. Among the most relevant ones, stringent quality standards and qualification requirements impose defect-free and first-time-right capabilities that are still challenging to achieve with state-of-the-art AM systems. This talk discusses existing solutions and open research questions for quality modelling, monitoring and control in AM via in-situ and in-line big data mining. Fostered by Industry 4.0, complex and massive data sets are currently available as multi-stream signals, image and video-images data. In this scenario, novel solutions for intelligent data analysis based on Artificial Intelligence and Machine learning represent a tremendous opportunity to reduce waste, thus fostering digital AM as a viable solution for sustainable manufacturing.
