Abstract:

The world of creative possibilities has been opened up thanks to the advancement of technology. With the advent of Large Language Models (LLMs) and other related technologies, it’s common to find oneself pondering over questions such as: what distinguishes AI from LLMs and other technical terms? How exactly do machines transform data into tangible outputs? And, in the event that something goes awry, who takes responsibility?

Thankfully, you need not fret any longer, as the first issue of Exchange Cafe has arrived to shed light on these very queries! Just take a seat!

In light of the emergence and widespread use of large language models, such as ERNIE Bot by Chinese Baidu company (文心一言) and ChatGPT by Open AI, large language models have garnered the attention of scholars in various fields. This thus serves as a great opportunity to bridge two seemingly unrelated fields – philosophy and computer science. In this issue, we cordially invite professors and students from technical, arts and social science background to exchange views on the existing state and future of artificial intelligence.

Joining us as hosts for this issue are Prof. Feng Yansong, hailing from Wangxuan Institute of Computer Technology, and Prof. Julius Schoenherr from the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies. They will be accompanied by international students Madison Farello from the University of Notre Dame, Nikolai Madlener and Joe Yu from the Technical University of Munich, and Noah Swainland from York University in UK. Their local students counterparts are: Jiang Yifan from Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies, and Liu Xiao from Institute of Aritificial Intelligence.
