Abstract:

Wusheng Yu is a Professor at the Department of Food and Resource Economics, University of Copenhagen. He conducts research in agricultural and food economics and policy, international agricultural trade and trade policy, and computable general equilibrium modeling. His current research focus is on the intersections of food security, international trade, and climate change. Currently, he leads a multi-year project on the future of the animal food sector against the backdrop of climate change mitigation, dietary transitions, and uncertain globalization scenarios. His previous projects, funded by the EU framework and Horizon 2020 programs and a number of national sources and international organizations, covered topics such as multilateral trade negotiations, international trade in agrifood products, and EU de-carbonization pathways, among others. His research work has appeared in a number of leading journals in his fields. Professor Yu holds a PhD degree in agricultural economics from Purdue University.

Biography:

Animal food production and consumption is at the center of agriculture’s potential contribution to climate mitigation efforts. Yet, few countries have explicit commitments to reduce agricultural emissions. In countries where such commitments do exist, concrete policy instruments such as carbon pricing and their implementations have not been spelled out. Furthermore, while many countries have mentioned the importance of abatement technologies, current estimates point to their limited potential in reducing agricultural emission. Finally, more nationalistic approach to food security and the potential application of agricultural carbon border adjustment mechanism (CBAM) can limit the potential role of globalized agrifood markets in reducing global emissions.
