Abstract:

In recent years there has a deepening engagement with Chinese philosophy by analytic philosophers, both in China and elsewhere. In the first lecture of this series I will offer an overview of the development of this engagement and discuss the historiographical and methodological issues that arise in approaching Chinese philosophy analytically. I will also explain its importance in the context of the pressing current concern with broadening the canon and diversifying the curriculum in (Western) philosophy.

[In this lecture I will expand substantially on what I said in the penultimate section (entitled ‘Historiography with Chinese characteristics’) of my paper on ‘Developments and Debates in the Historiography of Philosophy’.
