Abstract:
Cold-induced thermogenesis in brown adipose tissue (BAT) is associated with mitochondrial remodeling, but the underlying molecular mechanism is poorly understood. Here, we identify FAM210A as a cold-inducible protein localized to mitochondrial inner membrane. Adipocyte-specific knockout of Fam210a disrupts mitochondrial cristae structure and diminishes the thermogenic activity of BAT, rendering the KO mice lethal hyperthermia under acute cold exposure. Mechanistically, FAM210A fine tunes the activity of mitochondrial protease YME1L and OMA1 towards cleavage of OPA1 – a master regulator of mitochondrial remodeling. These data establish FAM210A as a new player in BAT thermogenesis through modulating mitochondrial cristae remodeling.
