Abstract: 

Dr. Winkler earned his medical degree at Freiburg University and completed a research fellowship at Harvard Medical School. His research has focused on cellular and molecular mechanisms of brain tumors, and he has advocated for the concepts of cancer neuroscience. In particular, Dr. Winkler's landmark discoveries of cancer-intrinsic neural mechanisms and neuro-cancer synapses have significantly advanced our knowledge of malignant brain tumors such as gliomas and brain metastases. Based on those research findings, he has led several clinical trials where drugs that inhibit neuro-cancer crosstalk are tested in glioma patients. For his pioneer works, Dr. Winkler has been recognized with many honors and awards, including the German Cancer Award (2022), the BIAL Award in Biomedicine (2023), and the Falling Walls Winner in the Life Sciences (2023).
