Almost twenty years after its first appearance on Peking University's stage in 2005, the youth edition of "The Peony Pavilion," produced by renowned writer Bai Xianyong, will once again return to this campus for culture enthusiasts. The Kunqu classic had been staged and was well received at Peking University in 2006, 2009, and 2016.
"The Peony Pavilion," originally written by Tang Xianzu (1550-1616) of the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), stands as one of the most celebrated works of Chinese literature and traditional opera. The youth edition of "The Peony Pavilion," since its premiere in 2004, has been performed over 500 times, becoming a signature work of the Kunqu Opera revival.
The youth edition of "The Peony Pavilion," based on the original Kunqu masterpiece, revolves around the love which is passionate yet full of twists and turns, between Du Liniang, a young woman from an affluent family, and Liu Mengmei, a scholar with dreams of success. It explores the emotional entanglements and eternal pursuits between life and death, deeply resonating with audiences.
As part of the "Beyond Boundaries: Peking University Chinese Cultural Inheritance Program," the restaging of the youth edition of "The Peony Pavilion" showcases the University's long-standing commitment to promoting and inheriting Chinese traditional culture.
In addition, a series of lectures will also be available prior to the performances, featuring renowned scholars and artists discussing the allure of Kunqu Opera.
