[Film Screening and Panel Discussion] Uncle Vanya
Apr. 23, 2026

Date: 23 April 2026, 18:30

Venue: Li Ying Hall, Peking University Hall

Abstract:

As part of the “World Literary Masterpieces on Stage” open class series jointly hosted by Peking University Hall and the School of Foreign Languages, Uncle Vanya has been selected as one of the classic theatrical films for screening.

Uncle Vanya is one of Anton Chekhov’s masterpieces, which focuses on the oppressive life of a family living in the countryside. Filled with resentment and despair, the protagonist Uncle Vanya attempts murder twice, only to be forced back to a dysfunctional life, revealing his hardships after disillusionment with an ideal life.

Prior to the screening, the audience can look forward to a panel discussion, featuring Professor Cha Xiaoyan and moderated by Professor Mao Mingchao, on a topic closely related to the play – Reality and Nothingness. Then the play directed by Rimas Tuminas will be screened. Tuminas had won the Golden Mask Award, which is Russia’s highest theatrical award, in 2011 for Uncle Vanya.
