Peking University, Beijing, December 1, 2009: The PKU-HSBC Finance Lecture themed “Current Financial Situations in China” opened up at Yingjie Communication Center on November 28th. Mr. Liu Mingkang, Chairman of China Banking Regulatory Commission delivered an excellent speech to more than 600 hundred students and faculty and was later named the “PKU-HSBC Finance Research Institute Consultant” by Professor Hai Wen, Vice-President of PKU. Professor Ping Xinqiao directed the lecture.
Mr. Liu reviewed the experiences gained and lessons learnt from the financial crisis. He pointed out the great risks in the multi-sectored financial operation such as running insurance and capital
business at the same time, Universal Banking and managing “financial supermarket”. He suggested that business should be run in separated sectors under independent supervision and a robust “cautious fire wall” should be built. As for the current financial situation in China, Mr. Liu reported that rapidly increasing loans this year were mostly driven by market demand and most investment went to the real economy. He also confirmed that China Banking Regulatory Commission would take measures, for example, raising the capital adequacy ratio and the coverage ratio to strengthen the risk management and build up a more robust system to stand great financial earthquakes.
The “PKU -HSBC Finance Lecture” has been held successful for a couple of times. Ms. Wu Xiaoling, Vice Chairperson, Subcommittee of Financial and Economic Affairs, Standing Committee, 11th National People’s Congress, Mr. Xie Ping, President of Central Huijin Investment Corporation and Mr. Zhu Min, Vice-President of People's Bank of China also presented and lectured.
