Peking University, Beijing, June 7, 2010: On the morning of May 27, the delegation of US Agency for International Development (USAID) visited PKU Health Science Center (PUHSC). The delegation included Mr. Richard Whelden, Director of Programming, Budget and Operation of USAID Bureau of Global Health, Mr. Adrian Ng’asi, economist of Bilateral and Multilateral Department, Partner Relationship Office of USAID, Dr. Jennifer Adams, counselor of Department of International Development of US Embassy in China and Ms. Virginia Bourassa, Project Manager of China AIDS of USAID. Prof. Fang Weigang, Vice President of PUHSC, Prof. Sun Qiudan, Director of Office of International Cooperation at PUHSC, Prof. Lu Xin, Executive Vice Director of PKU Global Health Research Center, and Prof. Liu Youfa, Guest Specialist of PKU Global Health Research Center and Vice President of China International Affairs Research Center, met with the USAID delegation.
Prof. Fang Weigang gave a warm welcome to the delegation on behalf of PUHSC and made an introduction of the effort and achievement since PKU Global Health Research Center was established. He said that health was a global problem to be solved by international cooperation and endeavors, and that communication like this was essential.
Prof. Lu Xin presented the Center’s analysis about the situation, challenges, opportunities, and perspective of China-Africa cooperation on health issues. Prof. Liu Youfa said in his speech that the basic of cooperation was to listen to voices from African countries, make clear others’ demands and reach an agreement.
Richard Whelden introduced the seven principles of the Obama administration about the new global health proposal, and said that he was willing to join hands with China and share China’s experience in raising health level and cooperating with other countries and organizations.
Both sides shared ideas about global health, especially experience and strategy about aiding Africa. They affirmed that new ideas were needed and stressed the importance of cooperation with other countries and international organizations. They also planned to meet again and compare notes at Washington with specialists from USAID.
