Intro: Professor Ray Ogden’s research interests are: nonlinear elasticity theory and its applications, mechanics of rubberlike materials, soft biological tissues, fiber-reinforced materials, nonlinear magnetoelasticity and electroelasticity. Residual stress effects in acoustoelasticity. At present, he is 6th Century Chair in Solid Mechanics, University of Aberdeen.
Deformation invariants play an important role in the constitutive modeling of many materials, including isotropic and anisotropic elastic materials. Such materials include fibrous biological tissues, electro-sensitive and magneto-sensitive elastomers, for which one or two preferred directions can be identified within an isotropic matrix. In these examples, invariants that depend on the preferred directions are constructed and included in the constitutive law along with the usual isotropic invariants. Other examples are materials that are subject to initial (or residual) stress, in which case the initial stress acts as a structure tensor from which invariants are constructed. There are many applications of constitutive laws for initially-stressed materials, ranging from modeling the properties of arteries, to shrink-fit engineering components, to non-destructive evaluation of material properties, to seismic wave propagation problems, for example. In this talk he will illustrate the use of invariants in two areas of application: (1) mechanics of the cardiovascular system, and (2) wave propagation in initially stressed materials.

Intro: When a hyperelastic membrane tube is inflated, a localized bulge will form when the pressure reaches a critical value. Further growth of the bulge is accompanied by decreasing pressure until the bulge reaches a maximum size, after which it will no longer grow and will instead spread in both directions. This phenomenon is well-known and has been examined in many theoretical, experimental and numerical studies. Professor Fu and his colleagues will first report some of their recent results on this problem and show how they can be applied to the mathematical modeling of aneurysm formation in human arteries.
Professor Fu Yibin now serves as editor of IMA Journal of Applied Mathematics , editorial board member of Acta Mechanica Solida Sinica and International Journal of Applied Mechanics , as well as expert group member of EPSRC Foundation in UK.

Intro: In many applications the entropic elasticity displayed by high molecular weight polymers is very useful, providing the building blocks of soft solids such as self-adhesive materials, hydrogels or rubbers. While classical applications of covalently crosslinked rubbers are well-known to polymer scientists, the mechanics of imperfect networks containing covalent bonds but also supramolecular interactions such as hydrogen bonds, entanglements and where the polymer chains are diluted in a solvent are more complex to understand at the frontier between liquids and solids. The speaker will discuss some recent results obtained in his laboratory on soft supramolecular adhesives ( Adv. Funct. Mat , 2010), soft-soft Nan composites ( Soft Matter , 2009) and dual urethane-acrylic hybrid networks ( Macromolecules in press).
