PKU Today in History - a daily column featuring historic events regarding PKU and PKUers.

Peking University, Mar. 31, 2011: As the fountainhead of Marxism in China, Peking University has always been at the forefront of the research and spread of Marxism.

The Peking University Association for Marxist Theory Research was set up on March 31, 1920. It was Chinese revolutionary and then PKU Library Director Li Dazhao who confidentially initiated the first organization in the country for the research of Marxism, which was almost a taboo under such authoritarian circumstances. Renowned avant-garde Chinese revolutionaries such as Deng Zhongxia, Luo Zhanglong, Gao Junyu, and Zhang Guotao were among its key members.

The association served as an important base to promote the disciplinary construction through translation, compilation, and publication of Marxist works, and as a platform for theoretical education through social training, seminars, and lectures.

For the following 90 years, Peking University has upheld the tradition of Marxism studies. The School of Marxism was officially launched on April 2, 1992.
