Peking University, Beijing, Mar. 25, 2010: Since Mar. 15, over 300 student associations of PKU have joined the campaign for recruiting members in the new semester. Every time walking through the Triangle, the “battlefront” of recruitment, passers-by used to be stuffed with copies of leaflets. While it is difficult to quantify its effectiveness, the regular glimpse-and-throw way of advertising turns out environmentally unfriendly.

But this time, something special emerged. At one end of the battlefront of the campaign, a big box for recycling leaflets stood out. It was the leaflets recycling activity initiated by Beida Linge, or “Forest Song of PKU” program.

Endorsed by other student associations, the recycling activity was carried out successfully, with praises from both students and faculties of the university. “A huge amount of leaflets are distributed during the recruitment campaign, and many of them are immediately put to the dustbin. Our Forest Song program will recycle the leaflets which used to be valueless, sort them out and return them to the associations,” one student responsible for the program was quoted as saying. Re-using raised the utility rate of leaflets, and thus significantly reduced the waste of paper. As for the leaflets that could not be used again, they would be contributed to Forest Song’s plan of “turning wastes into trees,” another event for a low-carbon campus.

PKU students and faculties showed their appreciation and support for this program through active participation. A thick pile of leaflets was collected in just two hours. The elaborately-designed recycler also became a favorite scene with which young people took pictures.

This enthusiasm accords with the forest song, a song that future leaders of the country and the whole world sing for a green globe.

About Beida Linge (Forest Song of PKU) Program:

Forest Song of PKU started in the fall of 2009 under the support of the Environmental Education Base for Chinese University Students (EEBCUS), and was the winner of North China Division of the Innovation on Environment Protection Championship organized by the All-China Youth Federation. “Forest Song” literally indicates its aim to realize low-carbon ideals through the carbon gathering function of forests. The program is made up of three major events - turning wastes into trees, innovation in promoting environmental protection and research on the topic of low-carbon, in order to increase people’s environmental awareness.
