Nov 11, 2024
Peking University, November 11, 2024: Lorenzo Codogno, former Chief Economist of the Italian Ministry of Economy and Finance and visiting professor at the London School of Economics (LSE), delivered a lecture themed “The Current Situation of the European Economy and Its Prospects” at the PKU Institute of Area Studies (PKUIAS) recently.
Prof. Codogno provided an in-depth analysis of the European economy from a historical perspective, pointing out that significant disparities existed in economic growth within the EU. He suggested that EU countries facing structural economic challenges must implement effective policy measures to increase investment and promote technological innovation, thereby enhancing total factor productivity and achieving sustainable economic growth.
Following this, Prof. Codogno reviewed four shocks the Eurozone had experienced since its establishment and the corresponding responses. He noted that establishing a more robust economic system and effective policy framework to address potential future shocks has become an urgent issue for EU.
On this basis, Prof. Codogno further discussed the challenges facing the global economy, including geopolitical tensions, the aftermath of the pandemic, and the energy crisis.
Furthermore, Prof. Codogno argued that China, the second-largest economy in the world, played a crucial role in this complex global economic context by promoting domestic demand and innovation, thereby enhancing economic resilience and bringing new opportunities to the global market.
During the discussion session, participants engaged in in-depth exchanges with Prof. Codogno about issues raised in the lecture, including the prospects for European integration and the potential of cooperation between China and the EU in the area of green development.
