Pages Meet Blooms: PKU Vintage Book Fair Draws Crowds
Apr 25, 2025
Peking University, April 25, 2025: A two-day vintage book fair kicked off at the Triangle on April 17, drawing crowds of students, faculty, and local residents eager to explore rare and secondhand titles while celebrating the enduring appeal of printed literature.

Organized by the Haidian District Publicity Department as part of its campus cultural initiatives, the event features various prestigious cultural institutions and bookstores, creating a unique space where technology and humanities intersect.

The book-themed poetry corner saw aspiring poets crafting verses from cut-out book pages, while laughter erupted at the ring-toss station where participants won vintage books as prizes. One of the most popular attractions proved to be the "book-for-plants" exchange, where attendees traded well-loved books for blooming flowers or lush potted greenery.

The Department of Chinese Language and Literature presented several thought-provoking installations, including the "AI vs. Human Writers" challenge that sparked lively debates as visitors attempted to distinguish between AI-generated text and authentic literary passages. Nearby, the vintage book restoration demonstration attracted curious onlookers watching delicate repair techniques on centuries-old texts.

The fair also features innovative programs like the book-crossing initiative. Picture this: participants tuck handwritten notes into donated books, each message a personal whisper from one reader to the next, creating a living chain of stories and connections.

Despite heavy rainfall on Friday, the event still attracted a large and passionate turnout. As the quote displayed throughout the venue reminds attendees: “Through reading, we invisibly construct ourselves — for life.” — a timeless reflection on joys of literature resonating ever more with modern readers.

"Events like this remind us that books are living bridges connecting past and present," said a student participating in the activities. “It’s lovely to discover out-of-print classics, marvel at antique bookbinding, and bond over shared literary passions.”
