Intro: Marcel Detienne (born 1935) is a Belgian historian and specialist in the study of ancient Greece. He is Professor Emeritus at The Johns Hopkins University, where he held the Basil L. Gildersleeve chair in Classics.
Along with Jean-Pierre Vernant and Pierre Vidal-Naquet, informed by the structuralism of Claude Lévi-Strauss, Detienne has sought to apply an anthropological approach to classical and archaic Greece.
Detienne received his Doctorat en sciences religieuses at the école des Hautes études in 1960, and his Doctorat en philosophie et lettres from the University of Liège in 1965. Detienne was at one time a directeur d'études at the école pratique des hautes études, where he taught until 1998. He was also a founder of the Centre de recherches comparées sur les sociétés anciennes in Paris. Detienne began teaching in the Department of Classics at Johns Hopkins University in 1992.

Intro: Lee Pui Tak is currently a Research Assistant Professor at the Centre of Asian Studies, The University of Hong Kong. He was born and educated in Hong Kong. He received his bachelor degree of history from the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 1988; a master and doctoral degree of Asian history from the University of Tokyo in 1991 and 1995 respectively. In 2004 he got the Fulbright Hong Kong Scholar Award to conduct a visiting fellowship at Cornell University. His research interests include: the history of Hong Kong as an urban city; Chinese business history; banking history of Shanghai; Cantonese diaspora; and Asian business networks.

Intro: John Hyman began teaching at American University in 1986. He has won several teaching awards and was recognized for outstanding service to the university community in 2000. He has directed the Writing Center since 1993, and in 2000 became the director of the College Writing Program. In addition to many courses in writing, he has taught courses in American Studies, the Beat Generation, and the history and literature of the Vietnam War.
