Peking University, Apr. 2, 2012: The 8th Model United Nations Conference for High School Students was held at Yingjie Overseas Exchange Center, Peking University (PKU). More than 600 students from 89 key high schools throughout the country acted the roles of the ambassadors of different countries in the following four days, and discussed global hot issues according to the UN’s procedures and rules at the same time.

This conference was sponsored by PKU, supported by the School of International Studies and Youth League Committee, and co-organized by Model United States. Leaders of PKU and representatives of UNESCO also attended the opening ceremony.

This year’s theme was “responsibility and cooperation”. Ten committees, including six committees with English as the working language and four committees with Chinese and one bilingual media committee, were established according to the theme. Nearly 600 students representing “diplomatist” discussed the international hot issues such as international security, environmental security, labor survival, modern education, food distribution and so on. During the conference, they would learn how to master the rights of expression on diplomatic occasions and opitimize the benefits.

At the opening ceremony, Vice-Dean of School of International Studies Wang Yizhou, Vice-Secretary of the Youth League Committee Yuan Rui and the representative from UNESCO gave their speeches successively. They hoped that these high school students could make full use of this opportunity to gain more knowledge about the national and world situations, especially learn how to understand others from different perspectives.

Apart from the group sessions, this Model UN Conference also held several featured activities such as the press conference, “Global Village”, campus tour, etc. Meanwhile, experts in related fields were invited to lecture for the representatives.
