Peking University hosts Postgraduate Forum on Foreign Languages and Culture

Peking University, June 8, 2021: The 13th Peking University Postgraduate Forum on Foreign Languages and Culture was hosted on May 22. Participants, who joined the event either online or in person, included around 170 postgraduate students from universities at home and abroad, as well as faculty members from the School of Foreign Languages at Peking University. Professor Ning Qi, dean of PKU School of Foreign Languages, and Professor Wang Dan, vice dean of PKU School of Foreign Languages, were also present.
In her opening speech, Professor Ning reviewed the history and development of the forum, saying that it has become a significant platform for cultural exchanges. Professor Ning also emphasized the importance of laying eyes on personal, social, and global development. The importance of foreign languages has become more prominent. Young students are now expected to understand the diversity of civilizations and culture through the use of languages, as well as playing an active role in spreading traditional Chinese values to the world.

In addition to the opening ceremony, participants also engaged in discussions through 13 parallel sessions. This year, the forum received a record 254 papers submitted by 264 postgraduates from more than 70 universities. Topics included eastern literature and culture, western literature and culture, foreign linguistics and applied linguistics, translation theory and practice, as well as area studies. Eleven papers were awarded with first prize, 29 with second prize, and 39 with the third prize.
With a history of 13 years, Peking University Postgraduate Forum on Foreign Languages and Culture serves as a significant platform for students of foreign language studies around the world to present the latest research, conduct fulfilling academic exchanges, and connect with outstanding peers. The forum was built on the rich foundation accumulated through its decade-long history, and continues to make great contributions to promoting the development of academic disciplines, helping postgraduates understand the latest research development, and propelling mutual exchanges and learning among students, thereby improving the quality of graduate training as a whole.
