Renowned translator Xu Yuanchong passes away aged 100

Peking University, June 17, 2021: Xu Yuanchong, professor from Peking University and one of the most distinguished translators in China, passed away in Beijing on June 17 at the age of 100. 


Xu has translated a considerable number of Chinese poems into English and French, as well as many British and French classics into Chinese.

He was awarded the Aurora Borealis Prize in 2014, the first Asian to receive the top global award for translators since it was introduced in 1999 by the International Federation of Translators (FIT). Additionally, the Lifetime Achievement in Translation Prize was conferred on him by the Translators Association of China (TAC) in 2010, along with many honors in the past years.
