Professor Yao Maosheng nominated for Outstanding Research Award by Journal of Aerosol Sciences
Sep 27, 2021
Peking University, September 27, 2021: Recently, the Journal of Aerosol Science (JAS), one of the two major international journals in the study of aerosols, announced that the first annual JAS Excellence in Research Award is to be awarded to Peking University Professor Yao Maosheng of the College of Environmental Sciences and Engineering. The 2021 award will be shared by Professor Yao with another scientist. JAS aims to recognise scientists who have made outstanding research in aerosol in the past five years, regardless of his or her age, field of research and is thus open to scientists around the globe.

The Journal of Aerosol Science was founded in 1970 and is the flagship publication of the European Aerosol Assembly. EAA represents 12 aerosol academic groups in Europe while JAS is a joint publication of these academic groups. Among all the submission directions, Bioaerosols is an important branch of the discipline. JAS awarded the award to Professor Yao Maosheng in recognition of his outstanding contributions in the fields of aerosol transmission COVID-19, drug-resistant gene aerosol transmission and aerosol particle toxicity in the past five years. In the past two years, Professor Yao Maosheng has been at the front line of scientific research against COVID-19, making outstanding contributions in the research of the COVID-19 transmission mechanism, aerosol monitoring of the coronavirus among others. He has been quoted by Science, the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) and other publications as an important reference for aerosol transmission of COVID-19. In addition, he has been awarded as a pacesetter in the fight against COVID-19 by PKU and his research results have been selected as one of the top ten scientific and technological advances in the ecological environment in 2020. Professor Yao Maosheng discovered that drug resistance genes are spread through aerosol diffusion and was thus selected as one of the best papers of the year by ES & T, a top publication in the fields of environmental science and engineering. Professor Yao Maosheng's research on the toxicity difference of global aerosol particulate matter provides a "tailor-made" scientific basis for the world's air pollution prevention and control program.

The JAS will soon publish an editorial containing the resumes and outstanding academic contributions of the winners. The JAS Excellence in Research Award is the fifth international aerosol award awarded to Professor Yao. Previously won awards include the Asian Young Aerosol Scientist Award by the Asian Aerosol Research Assembly, the Marian Smoluchowski Award by the Association of Aerosol Research, the Kenneth T. Whitby Award by the American Association for Aerosol Research, and the Special Gold Award by the International Exhibition of Inventions of Geneva. These well-known academic awards highlight Peking University's academic prominence on the international arena, showcasing her outstanding academic contributions in the field of Bioaerosols.
