Nov 18, 2021
Peking University, November 18, 2021: On November 18th, the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE) announced its list of newly elected members. PKU Professors Chen Songxi, Piao Shilong, Zhu Tong, and Jiang Baoguo have been honored as this year's newly elected members.

Chen Songxi

Chen Songxi, a full-time professor at PKU School of Mathematical Sciences and part-time professor at PKU Guanghua School of Management, earned his Ph.D. in Statistics from Australian National University. He is the founding director of the PKU Center for Statistical Science and has received numerous honors and titles for his contributions to science, including the Ministry of Education of China's First-Class Award for Research in Natural Science. Professor Chen's research interests include high dimensional data inference, environmental modeling and assessment, and machine learning. Thus he leads a research group of students and faculty focused on developing statistical methodologies and applications in air quality assessment in China, high dimensional statistical inference, empirical likelihood, and econometrical analyses on China's macroeconomic variables.

Piao Shilong

Piao Shilong, professor at PKU College of Urban and Environmental Sciences, graduated from Peking University with a bachelor's and a doctorate. His current study focuses on data-model integration in order to increase the ability to forecast the responses of the terrestrial carbon cycle to global change. He has participated in the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)'s 5th and 6th Assessment Reports and is on the editorial boards of several journals, including Global Change Biology, National Science Review, and Agricultural and Forest Meteorology. On March 9th, 2021, his paper titled "Multifaceted characteristics of dryland aridity changes in a warming world" was published in Nature Reviews Earth & Environment, which synthesizes observational and modeling evidence to demonstrate emerging differences in dryland aridity dependent on the specific metric considered.

Zhu Tong

Zhu Tong, professor at PKU College of Environmental Sciences and Engineering, earned his bachelor's and master's degree from Peking University, as well as his doctorate from University of Wuppertal, Germany. His study specializes in atmospheric, environmental, and physical chemistry, with a focus on atmospheric pollution and the health effects of pollutants in megacities. He has been the principal researcher for over 20 research projects and has published over 300 papers in peer-reviewed journals, receiving over 14,000 citations and having an h-index of 61. He has been the advisor to the Chinese government on controlling air pollution during the event of major international activities in China, including the 2008 Beijing Olympics, and in recent years, he initiated and organized an international collaborative research project CAREBeijing (Campaigns of Air Quality Research in Beijing and Surrounding Region), gathering 200 scientist and students together to advance Beijing air pollution control methods.

Jiang Baoguo

Jiang Baoguo is the president, chief physician, and professor at Peking University People's Hospital. Professor Jiang's primary research interests include the standardized treatment of severe trauma, injury, and healing of peripheral nerves and fractures around joints, pioneering the construction of China's trauma treatment system. Professor Jiang has published over 200 papers in academic journals both at home and abroad, including 21 SCI papers, and has received three scientific and technical awards as well as five patents for his work on using biomaterial conduit small gap to bridge peripheral nerve injury and artificial peripheral nerve constructed by bone marrow stromal cells. In 2020, Professor Jiang led his team in Wuhan to fight against COVID-19.

The Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering are national academic organizations comprised of individuals chosen to the highest distinction in the nation's scientific community. Being awarded a Fellowship in CAS and CAE membership is a lifelong honor. We show our utmost respect to all the newly elected members!
