2nd Top Hundred Chinese Economic Journals’ Chief Editors Forum held at Peking University

Peking University, November 19: Jointly organized by the School of Economics Peking University (SEPKU)  and editorial office of Economic Science, the 2nd Top Hundred Chinese Economic Journals’ Chief Editors Forum was held on 13 November, 2021, concurrently at Peking University and online. Pertinent issues in promoting economic research and editorial work were discussed, while the forum served as a bridging platform for editors and researchers in the field. To ensure the safety of participants and quality of discussions, the 136 distinguished editors from 122 renowned journals joined the forum through virtual meetings.

 
At the opening ceremony, Dean of SEPKU, Prof. Dong Zhiyong addressed on behalf of the organizers, noting the increasingly important role Chinese economy and economists on the global stage.

Later on, chief editor of Literature, History and Philosophy, Prof. Wang Xuedian delivered his keynote speech titled “Welcoming the Third Academic Transformation”. He recounted the developments of social science research and the three transformation in China amidst an evolving society. He also reiterated President Xi’s guidelines to prosper research in the arts, humanities and social sciences.
 
The main thrust of the forum – virtual round table discussions – focused on four topics, namely “Economic journals advocate for theoretical innovation”, “Economic journals’ role in establishing a modernized socialist country”, “Economic journals advancing international academic exchanges” and “Development of talents, field of study and journals in economics”. These sessions proved to be engaging and fruitful from the exciting discourse that proceeded in these sessions.

The editors then gathered in their respective sub-committees to discuss specific topics. Moderated by invited chief economics journal editors, the eight committees covered issues extended from topic of the earlier round table discussion, including enhancing quality of economic research, cultivating and supporting talents and journals’ part in evaluation of academic works and talents.

The forum came to a close with deputy chief editor of Economic Science, Yu Xiaodong, presenting the “Proposal of the 2nd Top Hundred Chinese Economic Journals’ Chief Editors Forum”. The four key ideas are: firstly, implement General Secretary Xi’s guidelines to run quality academic journals; secondly, prioritizing public interests and pursuing the Chinese Way; thirdly, uphold professional values to forge a community of Chinese economic research; lastly, promote innovation and creativity whilst enhancing the socialist market economy with Chinese characteristics. 

In his closing address, Cui Jianhua, PKU School of Economics council chair, expressed his hope and expectations for China on the international level of economic research, which requires journal publication as a means to propagate quality Chinese economic studies and develop talents in the area. He also commended the forum for the rich content and effective discussions, and finally closed the forum by wishing for good results from economic journals and academics to bring China to greater heights in the future.
