Peking University: March, 31, 2014: School of Transnational Law (STL) has participated in the International Criminal Court (ICC) Moot Court Trial Competition held in Beijing lately, competing fiercely with 15 teams from other top universities in China, and finally won the second prize in the China region.
Stimulating the real lawsuit process, the ICC trial competition is organized by the Grotius Center for International Legal Studies and supported by the ICC. This year’s competition is about a virtual state leader who was accused of the crimes against humanity. The case is complicated and reflects the focus of the International Criminal Law. The judges who participated in the oral debates trial are well-known legal professionals at home and abroad, including the international criminal court judge from Hague and Liu Daqun, former judge of the Yugoslavian international criminal tribunal.
STL has also won the third prize on legal document writing with Song Chao, one of the delegates, selected as the Best Oralist for Prosecutor. As one of the top three teams, STL will attend the global competition held during 19th and 23th of May in Hague, Holland. C.V. Starr Lecturer Robyn Barnard, a professor of STL, is the coach of the team and gives guidance to legal writing and oral contest during the whole process.
Zhou Ziqian, one of the delegates, recalled that “the domestic division competition of ICC moot court participation is an exciting experience. It is an opportunity for us to compete and communicate with the students from other famous universities and learn from the real judges. Through 5-month preparation and learning, we feel very gratitude that all of our hard work has paid off.” Another member also mentioned that “for us, ICCmoot court is a perfect opportunity for in-depth study of international criminal law. In essence, it is the in-depth battle of two value conceptions, which is the most exciting and valuable part of the competition. As a member of the STL family, we feel heartfelt thanks for the professors’ several-month support and patient direction.”
STL has made outstanding achievements in moot court competition from 2013 to 2014. In October, 2013, among the 28 teams, the STL has won the fourth prize in the domestic division of the international human rights law moot court competition. A month later, the VIS international commercial arbitration moot court team of the STL defeated 28 teams and won the first prize in the 11th "CIETAC Cup" international commercial arbitration mootarbitration tribunal debate contest. Recently, among the 40 universities of the domestic division of the Jessup international law moot court competition, the STL has won the second best applicant memorial. Among the 26 teams of the Asia Pacific region of the WTO Moot Court Competition, STL won the third best respondent submission.
