PKU-University of Cambridge River Basin Cultural Heritage Seminar takes place

Peking University, December 2, 2021: On November 21, 2021, Peking University- University of Cambridge River
Basin Cultural Heritage Seminar was held in both Beijing and Cambridge
online and offline to conduct academic exchanges on interdisciplinary
subjects including basin cultural heritage, urban and rural planning,
and archaeology. The seminar attracted wide attention and nearly 10,000
people attended.
In the beginning address, the founder of the seminar, Prof. Wang Fang
from PKU’s College of Architecture and Landscape Architecture pointed
out that the river basin is the earliest geometrical unit of human
activities and the research on basin heritage is essential to the
sustainable development of a community of life between humans and
nature. Prof. Shen Ruiwen, dean of PKU’s School of Archaeology and
Museology, explained that since the rise of ancient civilization is
mostly related to the river basin, how to absorb the wisdom of ancient
basins and apply it to contemporary society is a topic of the times.
Prof. Lu Bin from PKU’s College of Urban and Environmental Sciences
stated that starting from the coupling of nature and humanity, the
overall coordination of basins can be considered to promote the
high-quality development of the whole region.
5 experts were invited to attend and deliver speeches including Prof.
Wang Jianxin from Northwest University, Prof. Marie Louise Stig Sørensen
from Cambridge University, Prof. Huo Wei from Sichuan University, Dr.
Liliana Janik from the Heritage Research Center of Cambridge University
and Prof. Zhao Binfu from Jilin University. Experts conducted in-depth
discussions on the theory and practice of cultural heritage protection,
the roles of the river in prehistory and the protection of basin
cultural heritage.
Prof. Zhao Zhongshu from China Academy of Urban Planning & Design,
Associate Prof. Dacia Viejo Rose from Cambridge University, Prof. Feng
Changchun from PKU’s College of Urban and Environmental Sciences and Li
Yun, deputy director of PKU’s Office of International Relations were
also invited to carry out academic evaluation and interdisciplinary
dialogue. Scholars from relevant fields exchanged insights to jointly
promote the research on urban and rural space and basin cultural
heritage.
In his concluding remarks, Prof. Wang Fang expressed his hopes for more
attention to be paid to the diversity and unity of the settlement
heritage in order to spread cultural heritage. Prof. Zhang Jianwei, the
deputy dean of PKU’s School of Archaeology and Museology, summarized the
seminar with key words including resources and ecology, safety and
protection, as well as activation and inheritation.
