Two PKU professors elevated to IEEE Fellow Class of 2022

Peking University, December 6, 2021: Tian Yonghong and Cheng Xiang, two professors from School of
Electronics Engineering and Computer Science (EECS), Peking University,
were honored with elevation to IEEE Fellow Class of 2022 in recognition
of their significant contribution to the advancement and application of
science and engineering. Professor Tian was elevated for contributions
to knowledge-based visual data analysis. Professor Cheng was elevated
for contributions to vehicular communication channel modeling and system
design.
Tian Yonghong is currently a professor at Peking University. He was the
recipient of The National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars
in 2018 and is currently the deputy director of Peng Cheng Laboratory
Smart Network Research Department. His research interests include
machine learning, computer vision, and multimedia big data. Professor
Tian is the author or co-author of over 140 technical articles in
refereed journals and conferences and owns more than 38 US and Chinese
patents. He is currently an associate editor of IEEE Transactions on Multimedia and IEEE Access.
Cheng Xiang is currently an associate professor at Peking University.
His current research interests include data-driven wireless channel
modeling and system design for 5G high mobility scenarios. Professor
Cheng has published more than 160 journal and conference papers, 3
books, and 6 patents. Professor Cheng was the recipient of the IEEE Asia
Pacific (AP) Outstanding Young Researcher Award in 2015, the
co-recipient for the 2016 IEEE JSAC Best Paper Award, and received the
Best Paper Awards at IEEE ITST’12, ICCC’13, ITSC’14, ICC’16, and
ICNC’17. He is now an associate editor for IEEE Transactions on Intelligent Transportation Systems.
Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) is an
international technical professional organization dedicated to advancing
technology for the benefit of humanity. It has over 420 000 members in
more than 160 countries around the world. An IEEE Fellow is the highest
grade of membership and is awarded to members who have made significant
contributions to the advancement of engineering, science, and
technology. The assessment for the elevation is carried out by
professionals in this field annually, the total number selected as an
IEEE fellow will not exceed one-thousandth of the total voting
membership.
