Peking University, January 2, 2022: On the morning of December 18, 2021, the inauguration ceremony of the School of Artificial Intelligence of Peking University was held in the Yingjie Exchange Center.


On behalf of the school, PKU Vice President Huang Ru officially announced the establishment of the School of Artificial Intelligence of Peking University.


Huang Ru said in her speech that at present, the new round of technological and industrial revolution represented by artificial intelligence and big data is having a profound impact on industries and daily life. In order to facilitate China’s strategic needs and high-quality economic and social development, it is high time to enhance artificial intelligence education in schools, optimize the layout of disciplines, and put emphasis on new engineering education. Therefore, Peking University has decided to set up the School of Artificial Intelligence.
 
Academician Han Qide, vice chairman of the Standing Committee of the 10th and 11th National People's Congress, vice chairman of the 12th National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference and honorary chairman of the China Association for Science and Technology, wrote the inscription "Go Your Own Way" for the establishment of Peking University School of Artificial Intelligence.


Renowned scholar Zhu Songchun reported on the history, progress and planning of Peking University's artificial intelligence discipline. Peking University is one of the earliest teaching and research institutions to carry out artificial intelligence exploration in China, with strong discipline strength. Entering the 21st century, artificial intelligence has become one of the most promising and challenging research fields in information science.



PKU Council Chair Qiu Shuiping, PKU President and other esteemed members of the PKU administration jointly unveiled the School of Intelligence of Peking University.

Peking University is one of the earliest universities in China to carry out artificial intelligence research. It has established one of the earliest state key laboratories in the field of artificial intelligence - the State Key Laboratory of Visual and Auditory Information Processing. As early as 1985, Peking University integrated the strengths of more than 10 departments in the whole school and set up an information science center featuring interdisciplinary activities. Later, in 2002, Peking University set up the first intelligence science department in China and the first undergraduate major in intelligence science and technology in China.

We are confident that the School of Artificial Intelligence will soar to even greater heights!
