PKU School of Artificial Intelligence holds a seminar on AI

Peking University, March 24, 2022: On the evening of March 17, the PKU School of Artificial Intelligence (PKU AI School) held a seminar on the history and the future of AI discipline, kicking off the teaching and learning activities of the semester. Professor Zhu Songchun, the dean, gave a lecture entitled "AI: Trends, Changes and Strategies - towards a 'Double First-Class' AI Discipline in Peking University".
In the lecture, Professor Zhu reviewed the history and current status of the AI discipline, emphasized the responsibility that PKUers should bear in developing AI in the new era, and showed the AI School’s ambitious future plan to make AI a "Double First-Class" discipline. He hoped that PKU AI School students would integrate their patriotism into hard work, combine their own goals with the national progress, and make efforts to become pioneers in this field.

To be more specific, the lecturer discussed in depth how to outstand in the fierce AI field competition and proposed that "transferring from weak AI to strong AI ” is the discipline’s future. He pointed out that Peking University has always been a pioneer and builder of the discipline in China, and that cultivating talents is its the school’s first and foremost task at hand. To this end, the AI School has established brand new and comprehensive undergraduate and master's degree programs, made efforts to form a highly-qualified scientific team and built a grand unified theoretical framework revolving around fundamental theoretical research on AI.
At the end of the lecture, Zhu encouraged students to lead the future of AI, to actively devote to the the discipline’s development, and to strive to contribute to the nation and society.
The event has set the direction, position and development path for the AI School’s "Double First-Class" construction. Looking ahead, the AI School’s personnel will bear in mind President Xi Jinping's entrust to achieve “sci-tech self-reliance and self-strengthening”, and continue to make breakthroughs in the AI field.
