[Beijing 2022 Olympics] PKU Volunteers in the Olympics: a relay spanning 14 years
Mar 01, 2022
Peking University, March 1, 2022: In the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, a total of 630 volunteers, 57 interns, 15 performers and more than 900 medical staff from Peking University and PKU affiliated hospitals participated in the volunteer service.

At the closing ceremony of the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, over 18,000 Olympic volunteers gathered together to relish the last moments of their volunteer service. The newly-elected members of the IOC Athletes Committee, on behalf of all the athletes, presented the red lanterns to 6 volunteer representatives and thanked them for their significant contributions to the success of the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics.

Li Jiaxin

As one of the volunteer representatives, Li Jiaxin, a 2018 undergraduate student from PKU’s School of International Relations, recalls feeling immensely proud and grateful. She says that the volunteers had given their all to the games over the last two weeks, fully embodying the spirit of Chinese youth.

Li Jiaxin from China Hong Kong was a volunteer at the concierge, where she made full use of her bilingual language ability to provide language services to foreign guests and athletes. Despite the heavy workload, Li Jiaqi was encouraged by the inspirational messages on the signature book of the concierge, which was filled with thank you messages, in both English and Chinese from many foreign guests.

Guo Yijie

In the Beijing National Stadium, a feeling of “Deja Vue” swept the audiences when the main torch of 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics was extinguished. Children from Fuping, Hebei province sang the song “You and Me” , which was the theme song for the opening ceremony of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games 14 years ago.

Witnessing this scene, Guo Yijie, the leader of the Youth League of PKU’s Yuanpei College, thought back to that summer 14 years ago when she was still a sophomore in PKU’s Department of History. Her job as a volunteer at the Olympics then was to organize and coordinate press conferences in the crowd press room.

14 years later, Guo Yijie pursued her Olympic dream for the second time, this time serving as the executive leader of the training project, responsible for the training of PKU’s volunteers and leading the logistics team.

She said, “The calm and confidence of today’s volunteers impressed me a lot. I think the best era cultivates the best students. Now, there are plenty of opportunities to take part in volunteering jobs now, thanks to China’s rapid development. All the volunteers I’ve met are extremely quickly adapt to the requirements of the Winter Olympics, and are flexible enough to handle any unforeseen emergencies.”

Liu Zhewei

Liu Zhewei from PKU School of Physics, actively participated in the selection of volunteers for the Beijing Winter Olympics. Prior to the selection procedure, he had accumulated more than 160 hours in daily volunteering, earning him the honorary title of “Top 100 Volunteers of Peking University”.

At the 2022 Winter Olympics, Liu Zhewei took up the position of event service assistant. He stated, “if tiny details are taken care of, it can be astounding, the things we can accomplish together”, "I enjoy assisting others, and even a small favor can bring me happiness," he remarked.

Luo Mengxin

Luo Mengxin from PKU’s School of Economics has always been passionate about volunteering. When pandemic was at its peak in Wuhan, she launched a project entitled “One Table Plan” to provide free after-school tutorials for students from primary and secondary schools. The project attracted hundreds of volunteers from Peking University, Tsinghua University, and other higher learning institutions in China.

As the first batch of Winter Olympic volunteers from Peking University, Luo Mengxin took up the post in the field registration. She provided verification and certificate activation for Olympic personnel. In the event athletes forgot to take their documents, she would be required to communicate with other working staff to ensure that athletes can complete identity verification and enter the venue on time before the start of their competition.

This volunteer experience will undoubtedly make a lasting impression on all PKU volunteers. However, the PKU volunteer team's stories are far from over; Luo Mengxin and her peers are currently preparing for the Winter Paralympics, which will take place next month in March.
