Unveiling ceremony of National Cultural Relics Gene Bank of Chinese Civilization and Joint Laboratory of Archaeology and Chronology held at Peking University

Peking University, March 14, 2022: On March 10, 2022, the unveiling ceremony and symposium of the National Cultural Relics Gene Bank of Chinese Civilization and Joint Laboratory of Archaeology and Chronology were held in Yueguang Hall of Peking University Yingjie Overseas Exchange Center. Song Xinchao, deputy director of the National Cultural Heritage Administration (NCHA), Yan Yalin, director of the NCHA Department of Archaeology, Luo Jing, director of the NCHA Department of Science and Technology Education, Hao Ping, president of Peking University, Wang Bo, vice president of Peking University and Sun Qingwei, vice president of Peking University attended the symposium and participated in the discussion.

Tang Wei, director of the NCHA Archaeological Research Center, pointed out in his speech that the strategic cooperation with Peking University to build a national cultural relic gene band and a joint laboratory will contribute significantly to the construction of archaeology with Chinese characteristics. Shen Ruiwen, dean of Peking University School of Archaeology and Museology, stressed that based on the strong bilateral cooperation between NCHA and Peking University (PKU), the ongoing major strategic project will not only promote the development of archaeology with substantial results but also connect with cultural self-confidence, cultural heritage and national unity.

Afterwards, Hao Ping, Song Xinchao, Wang Bo, Sun Qingwei, Yan Yali and Luo Jing unveiled the “National Cultural Relics Gene Bank of Chinese Civilization” and “Joint Laboratory of Archaeology and Chronology” together.

Following Shen Ruiwen’s introduction of the progress of construction of archaeology at PKU, experts from both sides discussed the further development of archaeology and put forward their opinions on ideology, theory and method, and the internationalization of archaeological discipline at Peking University.

Sun Qingwei pointed out that the century of development of archaeology at PKU was rooted in the nation’s development and owed to strong support from the NCHA. Represented by Mr. Su Bingqi, teachers and students of archaeology at PKU embarked on a path of Chinese archaeology. In the new era, PKU archaeology teachers and students should have a sense of urgency and mission and firmly grasp opportunities for cooperation, keep the country’s goals in mind, and strive for the glory of Chinese archaeology.

Song Xinchao said that Chinese civilization holds unique value in the forest of world civilizations, and archaeology serves as an important tool for interpreting both the Chinese civilization and world civilization. To fulfill the long-standing dream of the Chinese people of archaeological development, the NCHA will further strengthen its support for more aspects such as the construction of PKU’s field archaeological base, the improvement of the archaeological discipline, and the enhancement of its internationalization.

On behalf of Peking University, Hao Ping expressed gratitude towards the NCHA for its long-term trust and support. He said that the teachers and students of PKU have been inspired by the construction of the gene bank and joint laboratory, and understand their responsibility in transforming and upgrading the development of archaeology. In the promotion of the discipline, focus must be given to disciplinary trends and trends of the times in order to foster a global outlook.

After visiting the Joint Laboratory of Archaeology and Chronology, Song Xinchao spoke highly of both the design of the laboratory and its efficient management, noting his expectations for the swift opening of the laboratory.

The "National Cultural Relics Gene Bank of Chinese Civilization" and "Joint Laboratory of Archaeology and Chronology" are the outcomes of continuous effort by NCHA and Peking University. In November 2020, the project was initialized by a bilateral strategic cooperation agreement to build a national gene bank and a world-class national laboratory of archaeology. Since then, many archaeological standards and technical specifications with new tools and methods have been produced. In the process of implementing the project, Peking University gave full play to its own advantages in literature, history, philosophy, art and other disciplines, further cultivating protectors of Chinese cultural heritage and making great contribution to the construction of philosophy and social sciences with Chinese characteristics.
