[Beijing 2022 Olympics] Three Groups from Peking University awarded “Outstanding Contributor” for Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics and Paralympics

Peking University, April 16, 2022: On April 8, the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics and Paralympics Commendation Conference was held in the Great Hall of the People. After 7 years of hard work, the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics and Paralympics were successfully held. The Chinese people joined hands with people from around the word to overcome various challenges and make history with this Olympic event. As a celebration of this monumental feat, a series of groups and individuals who made great contributions to the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics and Paralympics were commended at the conference. Notably, three groups from Peking University (PKU) were named “Outstanding Contributing Collective”. They are Peking University Third Hospital (PUTH) Chongli Branch, the PKU Winter Olympic Volunteer Service Team and Peking University Third Hospital (PUTH).

In 2018, Peking University Third Hospital Chongli Branch was established and designated as the first hospital for referral and treatment in the Zhangjiakou Division. During the Winter Olympics, Chongli Branch shouldered heavy responsibilities as Zhangjiakou Division received 2020 athletes and team officials from 79 countries and regions. On February 7, 2022, Chongli Branch conducted the first air rescue during the Winter Olympics. Through efficient cooperation between the air rescue staff of the command center and the medical staff, it took less than 20 minutes to transfer the patient from the arena to the emergency room. During the Olympics, Chongli Branch has treated more than 370 patients within the closed-loop management, and has been highly recognized by the Olympic Committee and the injured athletes.

Peking University Winter Olympic Volunteer Service Team
PKU has registered 7,588 volunteers for Beijing 2022, ranking first in Beijing. At the same time, Peking University is also the university with the largest number of overseas Chinese volunteers and international student volunteers.

The volunteers from PKU Winter Olympic Volunteer Service Team embodied the spirit of youth and China’s hospitality with their tenacity and dedication. 630 volunteers, 57 interns and 15 opening ceremony performers actively serviced the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics and Paralympics. Stationed at the Beijing, Yanqing, and Zhangjiakou Divisions, PKU’s volunteers were spread across 8 important venues including the National Aquatics Centre (Ice Cube), Doping Testing Center, Olympic Family Hotel, Beijing Winter Olympic Village (Winter Paralympic Village), Medals Plaza, National Indoor Stadium (Ice Fan), Big Air Shougang (Snow Flying Ribbon) and Main Media Centre.
The achievements of PKU’s “New Generation on Ice” have been the center of focus for authoritative media outlets and the people alike. The volunteers have received praise and shows of gratitude from Thomas Bach, president of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), international dignitaries, and competition venues.

In the “Salute to Volunteers” segment of the Winter Olympics closing ceremony, Li Kar Hing, an undergraduate student of PKU School of International Studies, stepped on the stage as one of the six volunteer representatives to accept the gift on behalf of the volunteer force.

Peking University Third Hospital
During Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics and Paralympics, Peking University Third Hospital, as the only designated medical security unit covering three divisions at the same time, sent more than 200 medical experts to guarantee the medical security. 224 staff from PUTH worked in the closed loop, serving 2,525 outpatients, 75 inpatients and conducting 81 operations. Notably, PUTH completed the first operation for Olympic athletes during the Winter Olympics, the first spinal fracture operation and the first air rescue. Furthermore, PUTH has also led 2 projects and 6 topics on “Science and Technology for the Winter Olympics”, and the work surrounding key medical technology issues and achieving a series of scientific and technological innovations to be used during the Olympics. Overall, the excellent work undertaken by PUTH has received high praise from officials and athletes, showcasing to the world China’s medical prowess.
