Alumni activities held to celebrate 124th anniversary of PKU

Peking University, June 2, 2022: Throughout May, the Peking University Alumni Association (PKUAA) and the Office of Alumni carried out a series of activities with alumni all over the world in celebration of Peking University’s 124th anniversary. Though separated by distance, the heart of the alumni and Peking University remains close as ever.
Online blessings
By recording videos in their local dialect or sending in handwritten blessings, PKU alumni actively participated in the celebration of the anniversary. Hundreds of blessings have been written in different languages such as English and Malay or other local dialects including Hokkien, Cantonese, etc, delivering the same loving spirit to their alma mater.

Memorial run
PKUers all around the world participated in a 5.4 km run as part of the “124th Anniversary International PKUer Run” event. From April 30 to May 4, 6,400 alumni at home and abroad in 4 teams ran for PKU. Runners overseas spanned the United States, France, the United Kingdom, Thailand and more!

North American Alumni Conference
From May 8 to 9, 2022, the 9th Peking University North American Alumni Conference was held online, with offline venues set up in Beijing and San Francisco. More than 300 alumni representatives from North America attended the conference, during which they touched on pertinent topics varying from cutting-edge technology to humanities and life with scholars on campus. 35 representatives from 17 North American alumni associations also conducted in-depth discussions on alumni work under COVID-19. Hao Ping, president of Peking University and Pan Qingjiang, acting Chinese consul general in San Francisco attended the conference.

Submissions from the alumni
On May 3, the Peking University Alumni Association and Archives of Peking University jointly called for submissions of photos and manuscripts as part of a themed anniversary collection, inviting teachers, students, and alumni to share their personal experiences on the PKU campus. Moreover, a series covering the history of Peking University Hall was also launched.

Similarly, the annual calligraphy exhibition themed “Together for a shared future” featured 129 contributions from teachers, students, and alumni. Children of PKU alumni were also encouraged to transform their wonderful ideas about life on the PKU campus into paintings. So far, 89 submissions have been received and displayed.

A digitalized celebration
Together with alumni company BlueFocus, Peking University Alumni Association customized a series of digital artworks for alumni overseas in the form of commemorative cards. On May 4, 20,000 cards were redeemed within an hour.

In collaboration with alumni enterprise tatame, the Alumni Association also used VR technology to create a virtual campus, allowing alumni to meet and relive their memories online.

Furthermore, on May 5, a Wechat emoji package for PKUers was released by the editorial board of the Peking University Alumni magazine. The cute emojis, crafted around daily life on campus, have been a huge hit.

A university anniversary serves as the key to learning from the past and looking toward the future. With efforts from the Peking University Alumni Association and the Office of Alumni, PKU and its alumni can together harness their strength to carry Peking University into a new era.
