Conference on development of China-Russia Mathematics Center held

Peking University, October 10, 2022: A conference on the development of China-Russia Mathematics Center was held on the morning of October 4 at Yingjie Overseas Exchange Center at Peking University. Zhang Jiping, director of China-Russia Mathematics Center and Academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences, hosted the conference. More than 50 representatives from China-Russia Mathematics Center, Lomonosov Moscow State University and related institutions attended the conference at Peking University or online.

Zhang Jiping said since the birth of China-Russia Mathematics Center in 2020, it had strengthened the international partnerships and cooperation in technology development. The communication between the two countries’ mathematical communities has been promoted as well. Professor Alexander Zheglov and Professor Alexey Tuzhilin, visiting scholars from Lomonosov Moscow State University, are on their 3-month visit at Peking University; and two exchange students from National Research University Higher School of Economics (HSE University) has already arrived Peking University. Apart from that, China-Russia Mathematics Center is to meet the third Russian visiting professor Georgy Sharygin in October. Besides, the Center has sent two PhD students to Lomonosov Moscow State University through a joint scholarship program supported by China Scholarship Council (CSC). 

Ye Xiangdong, deputy director of China-Russia Mathematics Center, emphasized the importance of building cooperative mathematical research platform in China and Russia respectively, noting that it is also necessary to properly resolve the mutual recognition of the Russian Candidate of Sciences and the Chinese doctorate. Zheng Xiaojing, the deputy director of China-Russia Mathematics Center said the center should devote to solve the crucial problem in modern engineering, aerospace and other fields.

Chen Dayue, another deputy director of China-Russia Mathematics Center, said that to upgrade internationalization, the School of Mathematical Sciences would provide mathematical courses taught in English for the convenience of international teachers and students.

Alexander Zheglov

Alexander Zheglov, and Fan Huijun, deputy director of China-Russia Mathematics Center noted that to strengthen the mathematical research cooperation between China and Russia, it’s necessary to carry out cooperative projects both for undergraduate education and postgraduate education, international summer school and exchange program for outstanding high school students. The speeches also noted that both Peking University and Lomonosov Moscow State University would be devoted to building a international research team for China-Russia Mathematics Center and carrying out cooperative projects with enterprises.

During the following seminar, experts continued to discuss in depth issues concerning the development of the China-Russia Mathematics Center. Zhang Jiping concluded the conference by welcoming a promising prospect that China-Russia Mathematics Center will grow into a world-leader in mathematics research, keeping exploring innovative and efficient cooperation modes.
