Peking University, January 21, 2025: Recently, the winners of the 2024 Chinese Medical Science and Technology Awards, one of the most prestigious awards in the field of medicine, were announced, their recognition attributed to a total of 90 achievements. Demonstrating a distinguished position in medical research, Peking University secured a record-breaking total of 10 awards, including 3 resounding first prizes, and commenced the new year with distinction. These triumphant accomplishments came after PKU was granted the highest honors in the 2024 Huaxia Medical Science and Technology Award, striding further towards new breakthroughs. The following are the 10 testaments to the excellence bestowed upon PKU.

First Prize—Innovation and Promotion of Organ Preservation and Functional Remodeling Technology for Malignant Tumors of Female Reproductive System
Lead contributor: Wang Jianliu, with Peking University People’s Hospital
The joint research on the treatment of malignant tumor in female reproductive system emphasized the preservation of fertility function. A set of “4R” concepts were proposed, respectively mitigating tumors, preserving organs, remodeling functions, and delivering children, abbreviated as “treatment, preservation, facilitation, and reproduction”. This systematic procedure have been recognized nationwide.

First Prize—Research and Development of Materials and Exploration of Clinical Key Techonologies for the Restoration of Oral Hard Tissues
Lead contributor: Deng Xuliang, with Peking University Hospital of Stomatology
In view of the obstacle concerning oral cavity faced by experts across the globe, a comprehensive innovative research were carried out to promote innovation. A series of breakthroughs were made, including improvement in durability, higher efficiency in pain relief, significant increase in alveolar bone mass, and overall enhancement to restoration effect.

First Prize—Development and Advancement of Precision Diagnosis and Treatment Technology for Gastric Cancer
Lead contributor: Ji Jiafu, with Peking University Cancer Hospital
With a focus on the key clinical issues in the diagnosis and treatment of gastric cancer, major technological breakthroughs have been achieved: the building of a new model for comprehensive treatment, the creation of a new system for precision surgery, the establishment of new standards of immunotherapy. At the same time, Professor Ji and his team hosted the International Gastric Cancer Conference in China for the first time, gaining acknowledgement by academia at home and abroad.

Second Prize—Precision Therapy for Late-Stage Mucosal Melanoma and Its Innovation
Lead contributor: Sheng Xinan, with Peking University Cancer Hospital
Aiming at addressing the challenges in mucosal melanoma, such as poor prognosis and a lack of standard treatment plans, an innovative study was conducted, starting from basic research to clinical practice and then to application promotion. This standardized procedure generated broad academic and social significance.

Second Prize—China Mental Health Survey
Lead contributor: Huang Yueqin, with Peking University Sixth Hospital
As the first national epidemiological survey on mental disorders holding reference value, China Mental Health Survey adopted protocols and methods setting internationally advanced level as benchmark. Important data of the prevalence, disability and mutilation rate, as well as the burden borne, service utilization, and other influencing factors in the case of 36 mental disorders across 7 categories, which made outstanding contributions to laying the groundwork for China’s scientific decision-making.

Third Prize—A Precise Management System Based on Improving Peri-Anesthetic Organ Protection and Long-term Prognosis
Lead contributor: Wang Dongxin, with Peking University First Hospital
To tackle key problems such as improving peri-anesthetic organ protection and providing long-term prognosis, an end-to-end innovative research were carried out, and the solution was applied more extensively.

Third Prize—A Lecture on the “Heart” as an Organ: Building a Matrix-Based Science Education System for Public on Cardiac Health
Lead contributor: Liu Jian, with Peking University People’s Hospital
The team led by Professor Liu adopted a multi-dimensional approach of integrated media for propaganda purpose, and constructed a comprehensive system to propagate scientific knowledge about cardiac health among the public. The project was titled “A Lecture on the ‘Heart’ as an Organ: Building a Matrix-Based Science Education System for Public on Cardiac Health”, delivering extensive and professional scientific perspectives while also driving people of all ages to participate in the creation of popular science contents.

Third Prize—New Mechanisms of Membrane Receptors in Cardiovascular Diseases, Theories, and Intervention Strategies
Lead contributor: Li Zijian, with Peking University Third Hospital
Professor Li’s team proposed an originally developed theory of membrane receptor activation and precise intervention strategies, setting up a research system for cardiovascular membrane receptors, following a “theoretical guidance→mechanism exploration→intervention strategy” procedure.

Third Prize—High-Resolution Copper Isotope Clinical Positron Emission Tomography Reveals Tumor Micrometastasis
Lead contributor: Yang Zhi, with Peking University Cancer Hospital
Dedicated to overcoming the bottleneck in the middle and long-term development plan of medical isotopes in China, the team succeeded in the clinical translation of nuclide 64Cu with medium and long half-lives.

China Youth Science and Technology Award—Establishment and Application of NK Cell Reconstruction Monitoring System After Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation
Lead contributor: Zhao Xiangyu, with Peking University People’s Hospital
The team conducted in-depth research on the regulatory mechanism and monitoring system of NK cell immune reconstitution after transplantation. The research findings were included in 14 domestic and foreign guidelines/consensus among organizations such as the European Society for Bone Marrow Transplantation, British Society for Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics, and the French Society for Bone Marrow Transplantation. It produced direct influenced on the formulation standards of donor selection guidelines in China, the US, the UK, France, and other countries.
