Peking University, February 12, 2025: A delegation led by Peking University Vice President Fang Fang visited Russia from January 24 to 26, 2025. During the visit, representatives attended the 270th anniversary celebration of Moscow State University and convened a work meeting for the “Sino-Russian Institute of Basic Sciences”.

At its 270th anniversary celebration on January 25, Moscow State University officially announced its plan to jointly establish the Sino-Russian Institute of Basic Sciences with Peking University, which has received firm support from the ministries of education of both countries. With its research scope ranging from mathematics, physics, chemistry, earth sciences to biology, etc., the institute is committed to promoting in-depth collaboration between China and Russia in the field of basic sciences in the new era, and injecting new impetus into global technological development.

In advance of the anniversary celebration, Prof. Fang Fang met with Roberto Medronho, President of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, and Yuri Mazei, Vice President of Moscow State University. They exchanged a trilateral cooperation memorandum. The three universities agreed to continue strengthening cultural exchanges and educational cooperation among young people and actively innovative cooperation models, such as joint master’s degree programs.

In the afternoon, the delegation traveled to Moscow State University, where the two universities held a work meeting for the “Sino-Russian Institute of Basic Sciences”. Xie Bing, Director of the Office of Scientific Research, elaborated on the overall operation plan for the institute. Chen Dayue, Dean of the School of Mathematical Sciences, Zhang Lifei, Dean of the School of Earth and Space Sciences, Peng Hailin, Dean of the College of Chemistry and Molecular Engineering, and others discussed disciplinary collaboration, as well as the future development and construction of the institute, with scholars from corresponding research fields and heads of relevant institutes at Moscow State University. After the meeting, Peking University presented Moscow State University with a gem painting titled “Twin Towers Illuminated” created by teachers and students from the School of Arts, in the hope of lasting and strengthened friendship between the two universities.
