Founder of Berggruen Institute visits Peking University

Peking University, April 7, 2025: Nicolas Berggruen, Chairman and Founder of the Berggruen Institute, visited Peking University (PKU) in March for the plaque-hanging ceremony of the new location of Peking University Berggruen Research Center and to accept the title of Honorary Trustee. 

Warmly received by He Guangcai, Chair of Peking University Council, and Gong Qihuang, President of Peking University, Berggruen thanked PKU for its longstanding support and recognized the school as one of the institute’s most important partners. He also expressed hope that both sides would continue to draw on the achievements of modern civilization to promote cultural exchange.

Emphasizing that the Berggruen Research Center serves as a stellar example for Sino-American cultural exchange and academic collaboration, He Guangcai expressed his expectation that cooperation can be deepened with a view to enriching human civilization and spearheading a community with a shared future for mankind.

Highlighting significant research outcomes in technology and philosophy achieved by PKU and Berggruen Institute, Gong Qihuang encouraged both sides to leverage their respective strength in collaboration to build a global academic network.

The new location for the Research Center is No. 54 Yannan Garden, a historical building that has housed many literary giants. This relocation not only signifies an upgrade of hardware, but also marks a new stage in China’s academic engagement in global governance.   

Peking University officials in attendance also included Lin Jianhua, Former PKU President and Co-Chair of the Academic Committee of the Berggruen Research Center, Wang Bo, and Fang Fang, both Vice President of Peking University.

Other attendants at the ceremony included Roger T. Ames, Co-Chair of the Academic Committee of the Berggruen Research Center, Lorenzo Marsili, Director of the Berggruen Institute’s Europe Center, Zhang Qi, Microsoft Senior Vice President, Chen Yuxian, author of Biography of William Hung, and Ronald Egan, Professor of East Asian Languages and Cultures at Stanford University.
