Achievement of Qiao Jie's Team Selected into Top 10 Scientific Advances in China in 2024
Apr 09, 2025
Peking University, Apr. 9, 2025: The discovery of a PKU research team led by Qiao Jie, Executive Vice President of PKU and President of PKU Health Science Center, was selected as one of the top 10 scientific advances in 2024. The ten research teams selected for the award were announced at the Zhongguancun Forum on March 27, sponsored by the National Natural Science Foundation of China.

Recognizing their study on the genetic cause of male infertility, this award marks the third time a research project led by Qiao has made the annual top 10 list, following honors in 2014 and 2015.

Their research found that the developmental defects of male germ cells in patients with Klinefelter syndrome, the most common genetic cause of male infertility, begin in the fetal period. The extra X chromosome in their germ cells does not undergo inactivation, leading to an imbalance in the gene expression of the X chromosome.

After being published in Nature in October 2024, this research has been gaining widespread attention from both media and academia. It not only provides important insights into the development of infertility in patients with Klinefelter syndrome, but also offers an important theoretical basis for early treatment.
