Jan 21, 2026

Peking University, January 21, 2026: Peking University (PKU) has topped the chart in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Computer Visions sections of the 2026 CSRankings as Chinese universities have come to dominate the global ranking of computer science institutions in general.

PKU leads its Chinese peers in publications across major AI-related areas, including artificial intelligence, computer vision, machine learning, and natural language processing — publishing 165 papers alone in machine learning. Thirteen faculty members published more than ten papers each at leading conferences, with Zhang Shanghang (19 papers), Zhang Ming (15 papers), Yang Yaodong (14 papers), Lu Zongqing (13 papers), and Zhou Jiahuan (13 papers) among the most prominent contributors.

The excellent showing of PKU is emblematic of a larger wave of Chinese institutions making headway in the globally competitive landscape of computer science, underscoring the Asian nation’s rising status as a leader of technology.

China accounts for 7 spots in the global top 10 of the general ranking and asserts its dominance even further in the AI ranking, claiming 65% of the global top 20 and all of the top 8 spots.

Besides AI, the ranking also has “Systems”, “Theory”, and “Interdisciplinary Areas” among its main areas of composition, which are then subdivided into a total of 27 sections. It has been credited as “the most accurate barometer of research strength” for its high standard of transparency and objectivity.

PKU’s rapid rise in AI power reflects strongly on its global pool of talent and innovative academic environment, which is also a testament to the institution’s relentless pursuit of excellence.
