Lin Jianhua meets with Professor Cao Wenxuan

Peking University, April 16, 2016: On the afternoon of April 11th, Lin Jianhua, president of Peking University, met with professor Cao Wenxuan, the Hans Christian Andersen Award winner at Yingjie Exchange Center.
 
President Lin congratulated professor Cao for being rewarded the highest honor in children’s literature, “This remarks the breakthrough of Chinese writer on this prize, which is also a public acclaim for Professor Cao’s outstanding contribution to literature. The world-wide recognition Cao has received reflects the power of Chinese culture.”

 
Cao gave a brief introduction to the Hans Christian Andersen Award and its awarding process. He said literature played an important role in cultural exchange. His work told original Chinese stories, which also stroke a chord with readers in other countries.
 
Contemporary literature faces the developing trend of current situation, which is an important “mirror” to show Chinese culture. Lin pointed out that Humanities are the basis of Peking University and the construction of the Humanities would be constantly strengthened. He also expressed his expectation that more literary works based on PKU campus would come out.
 
Other important leaders from PKU council and Department of Chinese Language and Literature also attended the conference.
 
After the meeting, Cao accepted the joint interview from the Xinhua News Agency, People’s Daily, CCTV, BTV, Guangming Daily, China Education Daily, etc. For the upcoming World Reading Day, he emphasized the importance of reading, which plays a fundamental role for the development of a nation.
 
In August 2016, Cao will leave for New Zealand to attend the rewarding ceremony of the Hans Christian Andersen Award.
