Memorial activities launched in PKU during Tomb-sweeping Festival

Peking University, Apr. 1, 2015: During the Qingming Festival, the Tomb-sweeping Festival and the traditional Chinese memorial day, Peking University launched a series of memorial activities in remembrance of the revolutionary martyrs. In the morning of April 4, Zhu Shanlu, chairman of Peking University Council, and Ke Yang, executive vice president of Peking University, along with the students of the Youth League School attended the memorial activities at the Monument of the Martyrs of Peking University,

Zhu Shanlu and Ke Yang, together with other teachers and students, first bowed and presented flowers to the Monument of the Martyrs, and then paid a silent tribute to the statues of Li Dazhao, a martyr of Chinese revolution, and Cai Yuanpei, the legendary president of PKU.

On April 5, representatives from the Youth League School, the Students Party Branch, other schools and departments of PKU gathered at the Jing Yuan Lawn (Serenity Garden Lawn) to commemorate revolutionary martyrs. Ye Jingyi, deputy secretary of Peking University Party Council, also attended the event.
The event officially kicks off at 8:30 in the morning. All the students and teachers stood in front of the monuments and paid silent tribute to the pioneers who sacrificed their lives to national liberation and revolution. After the tribute, two student representatives recited the poem of Praise to the Pine Tree with great affection, expressing deep respect to the martyrs.
After presenting the flowers and bowing to the monuments, Ye Jingyi led the students to the statutes of Mao Zedong, Li Dazhao and Cai Yuanpei to further recall the extraordinary contributions these pioneers have made to the founding of our country. The year 2015 marks the 70th anniversary of the victory of the the Chinese People’s Anti-Japanese War and the World Anti-Fascist War. The tomb-sweeping ceremonial activities not only review the legacy of the martyrs, but also encourag the youth of PKU to inherit May 4 Spirit and carry forward the tradition of Peking University.

On April 6, the Office of Student Affairs arranged the tomb-sweeping activity at the Li Dazhao Martyr Cemetery for more than 40 representatives of the student party members coming from the School of Environment, Science and Engineering, Department of Political Science and Administration, and School of Earth and Space Science. The student party members renewed their oath at the CPC Joining Ceremony, and expressed their loyalty to their oath. And then the students visited the Li Dazhao Martyr Cemetery Showroom, and looked back on the major contributions Li Dazhao has made to the national revolution and the course of communism.

In addition to the on-site events, the faculty and students also expressed their respect through various other means. For example, the Office of Student Affairs organized an online memorial ceremony for the students who could not make it to the monuments. And PKU librarians held their own ceremonies in the library.
Background info:
Monument of the Martyrs of Peking University was established on May 4, 1993, in memory of the 95 martyrs from Peking University who devoted themselves to the career of national liberation and people revolution. The front of the monument was carved “Monument of the Martyrs of Peking University” in golden characters, written by ChenYun, and the reverse side carved with the inscription and names, native places, times of the 95 martyrs, among which the first being Li Dazhao.
