Peking University, June 14, 2012: The Academy of Medical Sciences (UK) announced the latest list of 46 co-opted fellows out of 354, among whom was Professor Kar Keung Cheng, Dean of Department of General Practice, Peking University (PKU) Health Science Center.

Born in Hong Kong in 1958, Professor Kar Keung Cheng studied at the University of Hong Kong (HKU) from 1978 to 1984, furthering his study successively at the University of Oxford and the University of Toronto later. In 1986, he returned HKU as lecturer of the Department of Community Medicine. Finishing the doctorate life in Oxford, he has served as Professor of Public Health and Primary Care at the University of Birmingham since 1995.
Cheng’s main interests are in the epidemiology, prevention and control of important non-communicable diseases, as well as the development of primary care in China. 150 articles of him have been published on international journals, with some 3700 times citied.
Professor Cheng has also been in charge of the Sino-UK cooperation on primary health in the past two years.
In May 2011, Cheng was invited by PKU as Founding Dean and Visiting Professor of Department of General Practice. Since then, the department has been devoted to the development of a professional education system suited to China’s contemporary conditions, with a set of domestic advanced explorations on syllabus arrangement, graduate training, base construction and external communication.
