Peking University, April 3, 2023: Vice President and Provost of Peking University Wang Bo led a delegation on a visit to Spain and Egypt from March 22 to 28. They visited four universities, the Chinese Embassy in Spain, and the Grand Egyptian Museum. They also attended the 15th-anniversary celebration of the Confucius Institute at the University of Granada (ICUGR)and the Council Meeting of the Confucius Institute at Cairo University.

On March 22, the delegation visited the Autonomous University of Madrid (UAM). Prof. Wang Bo and Vice President of UAM Irene Martín renewed the student exchange agreement between the two universities. Both sides expressed the willingness to promote mutual visits and joint research. The delegation then visited the Chinese Embassy in Spain, where Prof. Wang met with Qu Xun, Minister of the Chinese Embassy in Spain. Prof. Wang said that with support from the Embassy, PKU will continue to work with Spanish universities in its “Global Engagement Year,” and celebrate the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Spain.

From March 23 to 24, the delegation visited the University of Granada (UGR). At the Council Meeting, Prof. Wang spoke with the university’s president and vice president, Pilar Aranda Ramírez and Dorothy Kelly, about future developments of the institute. At the 15th anniversary celebration of the UGR Confucius Institute, Wang affirmed its remarkable achievements. He believes that with strong support from both schools, the UGR Confucius Institute will play a more crucial role in the mutual learning of Chinese and Spanish culture.

On March 26, the delegation attended the Council Meeting of the Confucius Institute at Cairo University (CU), where Wang had an in-depth exchange with Mohamed Othman Elkhosht, president of Cairo University. Wang proposed the expansion of cooperation in fields such as archaeology to promote student exchanges. On the same day, the delegation visited the American University in Cairo, and met with the president and provost of the university, Ahmad S. Dallal and Ehab Abdel Rahman.

On March 27, the delegation visited the Grand Egyptian Museum and spoke with curator Atef Muftah. Prof. Wang highlighted the importance of interaction between China and Egypt in exploring the commonality of the developments in human civilization. On the same day, the “Chinese Language plus Kunqu Opera and Guqin” module jointly organized by Peking University and the Confucius Institute at Cairo University officially started. It is part of a postgraduate credit course for Chinese Language students at Cairo University.
Professors from the School of Foreign Languages, Department of History, and School of Arts at Peking University also participated in this visit.
