Peking University, Nov. 21, 2011: Stockholm University delegation led by Vice-Chancellor Kare Bremer paid a visit to Peking University on the morning of Nov. 14. Prof. Zhu Shanlu, Chairman of the Peking University Council, received the guests at Linhuxuan.

Prof. Zhu first reviewed the course of cooperation and exchange over the past 30 years between Peking University and Stockholm University, expressed his thanks for support from Stockholm University and gave a brief introduction of PKU discipline construction and talents training in recent years. He pointed out that today PKU is in the 2nd centennial period of opportunity for development, an important period for PKU to expand international cooperation and exchange, enhance international influence and build itself into a world-class university featured in eastern culture, high quality talents and strong social service capacity. He also expected that this visit would provide both sides with a new opportunity of cooperation on existing basis, such as sending exchange students and visiting scholars to each other, setting up scholarship for exchange students and project for information sharing, and deepening cooperation between departments and research centers. Besides, Prof. Zhu talked about social responsibilities universities should take with Vice-Chancellor Bremer. In his opinion, nowadays universities should not only train talents, but also get rid of impulsiveness and concentrate on social problems, playing a pioneering role in guiding ideas and culture of our society.

Vice-Chancellor Kare Bremer agreed with Prof. Zhu and said Stockholm University has a similar development idea with PKU, aiming at serving the society and cultivating talents. Today, organizations like Center for European Economic Research and World Environment Institute have been set up in Stockholm University. It has established cooperation with more than 30 universities in the world with its academic motion project, which Bremer invited PKU to join to promote scientific research between two universities. He also emphasized the importance of strengthening international cooperation and information sharing in constructing world-class universities and that’s also the reason why he paid this visit to PKU.

Background Information

Stockholm University is a famous Sweden university built in 1878. At the beginning, only natural science courses were provided. It established degree-granting system in 1904 and schools of law and humanities in the following 20 years. At present, it has four departments including Law, Humanities, Social Science and Natural Science, providing a broad range of choices for students.
