Peking University April 24, 2023: Recently, State Secretary and Special Envoy for International Climate Action at the Federal Foreign Office of Germany, Jennifer Morgan, visited Peking University (PKU) and delivered a speech on “International Cooperation in Times of the Climate Crisis.” Before the speech, Gong Qihuang, president of Peking University, and Zhang Jin, vice president of Peking University, met with the delegation at the Yingjie Overseas Exchange Center. 

Gong extended a warm welcome to Morgan and introduced PKU’s vision for its 2023 Global Engagement Year and reviewed the PKU delegation’s recent visit to Germany. Gong noted that Germany was the European country with which PKU had had the most dynamic interactions and that PKU had established a fruitful collaboration with multiple leading universities and research institutes in Germany. Gong expressed his hope to further promote cooperation between the two countries in the field of environmental and basic sciences.

Morgan thanked PKU for its long-term support of her work, and said she looked forward to strengthening personnel exchanges and carrying out substantial collaboration between universities and research institutes between China and Germany to make positive contributions to the global climate environment. Morgan expressed hope that through exchanges, young people from various countries could be encouraged to pay attention to environmental issues and to promote the transformation of social development models.

After the meeting, Morgan delivered a speech on “International Cooperation in Times of the Climate Crisis” to teachers and students of PKU, and a robust discussion followed. She pointed out that Germany will continue its independent and positive position in tackling the global common challenge of the climate crisis. She also said she expects that, through conference and technology-sharing, China and Germany can fully cooperate on climate issues and make significant contributions to alleviating the global climate crisis.

After her speech, Morgan held an academic seminar with experts and scholars from PKU and related domestic institutions and exchanged views on climate policy, renewable energy and other related issues.
