Peking University, June 2, 2023: A group of 14 international students from PKU's School of Chinese as a Second Language and Yenching Academy made their way into the classrooms of the Affiliated High School of PKU on June 29, 2023, to engage with seventh-grade students.

These international students, hailing from 11 countries including the UK, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Finland, the US, Russia, and Nigeria, came together to foster cross-cultural understanding and exchange.

The international students were divided into several groups ahead of time, each assigned to a specific classroom. Acting as one-day lecturers, they brought fresh perspectives and insights to the students, sharing their experiences with cross-cultural communication, Chinese language learning, and their own personal journeys through middle school.

During the exchange session, the High School students impressed their international counterparts by demonstrating their knowledge of the countries where the visiting students hail from. Engaging in fluent English, the young students shared their thoughts on various topics of interest, including the challenges of learning Chinese, unique cultural customs, and examination systems in different countries.

Additionally, two talented students performed captivating pieces of art that left the international students awestruck, prompting them to record the mesmerizing moments. The open and inclusive atmosphere, along with the student-centered approach adopted by the High School, left a profound impression on the visitors.

Through their active participation in these activities, the international students not only improved their Chinese language skills but also gained a deeper understanding of Chinese culture and the educational system.

As part of a series of events celebrating PKU’s “Global Engagement Year,” this activity was made possible with the support of PKU's School of Chinese as a Second Language, which is dedicated to developing a diverse curriculum system, catering to the needs of international students.
