Peking University, June 15, 2023: Peking University (PKU) President Gong Qihuang led a delegation to Japan from June 12-13, 2023. The visit was aimed at strengthening ties and exploring new modes of international exchange and cooperation between PKU and world-leading universities and research institutes in Japan. 

The delegation visited the University of Tokyo, the Institute of Physical and Chemical Research (RIKEN), and Waseda University, and met with the Chinese Ambassador to Japan, Wu Jianghao.

At the University of Tokyo, President Gong engaged in fruitful discussions with President Teruo Fujii, emphasizing PKU’s “Global Engagement Year” and the importance of promoting faculty and student exchanges. President Fujii expressed the University of Tokyo's commitment to strengthening strategic partnerships in various fields, highlighting PKU as a strategic partner.

During the trip, President Gong also visited RIKEN, where he met with President Makoto Gonokami. The two parties renewed their strategic cooperation agreement, reviewed past collaborative projects, and discussed further advancements for strategic cooperation.

At Waseda University, Gong attended a dialogue session with President Aiji Tanaka and other senior school leaders. They discussed existing collaborations in the humanities and social sciences and expressed enthusiasm for expanding exchanges in science and engineering fields as well as postdoctoral programs. Tanaka highlighted the deep historical connection between Waseda University and PKU and pledged strong support for high-level cooperation in various fields.

The visit included with a courtesy meeting at the Chinese Embassy in Japan, where Ambassador Wu Jianghao commended PKU’s contributions to Sino-Japanese exchanges. President Gong shared insights and future prospects for cooperation, whilst Ambassador Wu expressed full support for PKU’s collaborations with Japanese universities and research institutions.

This visit led by President Gong highlights PKU’s commitment to fostering international partnerships. The delegation's engagement with renowned Japanese universities and institutes will set the stage for further people-to-people exchanges and cooperation in the humanities and scientific technologies between China and Japan.
