Director-General of OECD NEA William D. Magwood visits Peking University

Peking University, July 29, 2023: William D. Magwood, the Director-General of the OECD Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA), recently paid a visit to the Peking University. Upon his arrival, Magwood's delegation was greeted by Gong Qihuang, president of Peking University, who was accompanied by Wang Bo, vice president and provost of PKU.

During the meeting, Gong warmly welcomed Magwood and took the opportunity to commend the NEA for its remarkable contributions to the advancement of global nuclear safety governance and its efforts in leveraging nuclear solutions to combat climate change - two vital issues that concern humanity as a whole. With a history spanning over 60 years, Peking University has been instrumental in nurturing approximately 5,000 talents in the field of nuclear technology, thereby serving as the bedrock for the growth of China's nuclear industry.

Gong expressed the willingness to deepen cooperation with NEA by the advantages of interdisciplinary scientific research at Peking University, and contribute to the improvement of global radiation security, the low-carbon sustainable economy, etc.

In response, Magwood conveyed his heartfelt appreciation for the exceptional work carried out by Peking University in the realm of nuclear science education. Stressing the NEA's unwavering commitment to the field, he emphasized their keen interest in promoting collaboration between Peking University, key decision-makers, stakeholders in the nuclear energy sector, and the public. Such partnerships are envisioned to pave the way for technological innovation and the nurturing of high-level talents crucial to the future of nuclear energy.

The fruitful panel discussion saw the participation of distinguished individuals, including Prof. Yan Xueqing, vice dean of the School of Physics, Prof. Yang Lei, vice dean of the Institute of Energy, Prof. Zhang Shiqiu from the College of Environmental Sciences and Engineering, and Li Yun, director of the Office of International Relations.

Following the engaging meeting, Magwood took the time to visit the accelerators at the School of Physics, engaging in insightful discussions with researchers about their ongoing projects.
