Peking University, January 20, 2025: On January 13, 2025, Peking University (PKU) conferred the title of Honorary Professor to Dr. Hiroshi Amano, Nobel Laureate in Physics and professor at Nagoya University in Japan.
The conferment ceremony took place at Linhuxuan at PKU. Chairman of PKU Council Hao Ping attended the award ceremony. Xu Wenwei, former president of HiSilicon, former director of Huawei, and Fang Fang, vice president of PKU, participated in the event.

Hao Ping warmly welcomed Hiroshi Amano, and expressed gratitude towards Amano’s contributions to promoting Sino-Japanese scientific and educational exchanges, as well as the development of disciplines and talent cultivation at PKU. Hao Ping also looked back on Amano’s academic achievements and his connections with PKU, the University’s exchanges with Japan, and highlighted international exchange programs such as the “PKU Hall” Lecture series and the annual Beijing Forum. Moving forward, Hao Ping hoped that both sides could contribute more to global scientific progress and human development.
Hiroshi Amano has deep ties with China and PKU, said Fang Fang. As 2025 marks the “Year of Technological Innovation” at PKU, the university will continue to work with global partners to promote academic exchanges and technological innovation, and hopes to receive Amano’s continued support.
Hiroshi Amano expressed his gratitude for being conferred the honorary professorship by PKU, a world-class university. He reflected on the history of cooperation with PKU and looked forward to teaching and conducting collaborative research with PKU students in the future.
Leaders and student representatives from the School of Physics, School of Electronics Engineering and Computer Science, School of Electronics, School of Integrated Circuits, Office of International Relations, and others also attended the honorary professorship conferment ceremony.

Hiroshi Amano is currently a professor at Nagoya University, an academician at the Japan Academy and the Japan Engineering Academy, as well as foreign academician at the National Academy of Engineering in the United States and the Chinese Academy of Engineering. Amano was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2014, along with Isamu Akasaki and Shuji Nakamura, for their outstanding contributions to nitride materials and semiconductor lighting.
