Director of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine Visits PKUHSC

Peking University, April 29, 2025: Liam Smeeth, Director of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, recently visited Peking University Health Science Center (PKUHSC), in an effort to boost long-term strategic partnership with the school with a view to conducting joint research and teaching programs.

Warmly welcoming Mr. Smeeth at a reception meeting, Dean of Peking University School of Public Health Zhan Siyan highlighted notably successful cases of cooperation between the two schools in education and research in the field of public health. She then expressed expectations for deeper cooperation in this field. 

Associate Dean Wang Haijun then introduced to Mr. Smeeth the operations at the school and PKU China Center for Health Development Studies.



In a speech addressed to students and faculty at PKUHSC, Mr. Smeeth pointed out that amid today’s environment of complex and fast changes, research in public health is crucial to identifying and treating diseases. He also said that as the cost and speed of research are increasingly optimized with the advance of AI, new tools and methodologies should be employed in conducting higher-quality research to precisely address urgent problems.

In pointing out that the key lies in fostering the next generation of medical professionals, Mr. Smeeth encouraged everybody to explore prospective fields of cooperation.

PKUHSC officials at the reception meeting also included Ren Minghui, Director of PKU China Center for Health Development Studies, and Jian Weiyan, Assistant to the Dean, among others.
